At first we wanted to move on the next day but our hosts near Rainbow Beach offered us their car for the day (just perfectly timed after we got Vroni's drivers license translated - nice). We decided to stays and went to Inskip Point, watching a sailing race, then to Rainbow Beach and to the huge sand dunes of Carlo Sandblow and back to Tin Can Bay where we would meet our hosts. There we found some cute soldier crabs to observe.

One thing we were sure we wanted to do on the East Coast was visiting Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. After arriving in Hervey Bay we took one day to plan and prepare for our trip there and decided to take the ferry over there, hike to Lake McKenzie, camp the night, spend a second day Hong around the island and take the boat back on the evening. One of the resorts had the offer to give you a shuttle to the ferry, the ferry ride and a lunch for a pretty good price, so wet decided to take that offer. Officially you are meant to just spend the day but our host Sharon told us that they never check tickets on the return and consequently we just added one night camping.
The shuttle picked us up and once on the island we spent some time in the resort before having our included lunch and starting our hike to Lake Mckenzie. After two hours we arrived at that stunning lake and even found a couple to give us a ride in their 4WD to one of the camp sites. We had a fun night together and on the next morning they took us to the eastern beach from where we wanted to visit Lake Wabby, walk back to Lake Mckenzie and then back to the ferry. Back at the lake Vroni managed to find another couple to take us back to the ferry, saving us 2h hiking along the way we came the day before. On the ferry back to the mainland we even had an amazing sunset and it was an amazing experience to visit Fraser Island.

There was some bad weather forecasted for the following day which lead us to stay with Sharon for another day just to relax a bit before getting back on our bikes.

All the best from Down Under,

Keep cycling and a tail wind,

Vroni, Droni & Joni
