From the West Coast to the Bay of Fires

After Strahan the Tasmanian West Coast showed its real face with steep hills, harsh mountains and pure wilderness. Just the cycling in this area was a joy and even the hills could not take that away. Nelson Falls, Lake St Clair, the Great Lake and Liffey Falls were some of the gems along the way and we were really glad we decided to take this route. During that time it was still the four of us and we had a great time together untill Lukas and Timo kept cycling South and we turned back to the North.

With a really hard day of 130km with hills and gravel road we left the Tasmanian Highlands to get out before some nasty weather arrived. In Westbury we spent a really great time with our WarmShowers host Simon and his dogs Tommy and Bear before moving on. From Westbury we cycled all the way up to the Northern Coast in order to get to the East Coast of Tasmania. Just heading East and through Launceston would have meant cycling through pretty hilly country for quite a while, so the roads further North were less busy and flatter and allowed us to reach the Bay of Fires at its Northern end of Ansons Bay where we camped at the amazing free camp at Policeman's Point. From there we took our time to slowly move through all the different bays that make up the Bay of Fires. The Gardens and the free camp at Cosy Corner were definitely some highlights of our time there. The intense orange color of the algea growing on the rocks creates a strong contrast to the light blue color of the sea. We even decided to stay a second night at our campsite in Cosy Corner North even though the weather would have been good enough to cycle. The view from our tent was just too good and we spend a whole day taking pictures at the beach and chilling in our tent just enjoying the view. If you ever go to Tasmania, do not miss this beautiful part of the country!

All the best from Tassie,

Keep cycling,

Vroni, Droni and Jonas
